Janet Hayes is an award-winning Australian artist with 40 years experience as a professional artist and art teacher. Working across pastel, acrylic and watercolour, Janet creates expressive landscapes, portraits, figurative works and still life inspired by observation, colour, light and the natural world.
Based in Victoria, Janet exhibits her work throughout Australia and internationally. She also offers regular art classes and is available for workshops, demonstrations and art exhibition and competition judging.
“Janet Hayes is an artist whose love for landscape, still life, and the figure is carried through media such as pastel, acrylic, charcoal and oil. Her practice is rooted in life drawing and observational work; she values sensitive, free-flowing line, building explanatory stories through objects, composition, colour, tone. She is fascinated especially by effects of water: reflections, flow, what lies beneath surfaces. In her recent work, her Tasmanian Series, she has responded to the wilderness of Tasmania, doing plein air studies, sketching, photographing, and then working in the studio to transport those experiences into larger, richly coloured works.
In Janet’s art we see a devotion to seeing: to observing the subtle shifts of light, the poetry of colour, and the visceral beauty of form. Whether in landscape, in still life, or in figure, her technique is both disciplined and expressive—grounded in classical training (life drawing, portraiture) yet alive with spontaneous gesture and softness.”

About Janet
Janet Hayes
Janet Hayes is an award-winning Australian artist with a long professional career spanning exhibitions, teaching, demonstrations and art education.
She has held thirteen solo exhibitions in Australia and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom, China, Canada and Europe and has appeared in national and international art publications and books.
Janet has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Allied Artists of America Award at the Pastel Society of America annual exhibition in New York and the Inaugural John Dudley Portrait Prize, Emerald, Victoria
She has studied life drawing and portraiture in Australia and New York and has spent decades developing her own artistic practice while sharing her knowledge with others.
